blackhorn 209
Constructed specifically for in-line muzzleloaders equipped with a 209 primer ignition system. This powder produces extremely high velocities as well as unequaled precision. BlackHorn 209 is the only muzzleloading powder available that is non-corrosive. It is non-hygroscopic, which means that variations in temperature or humidity will have no effect on its performance (which decreases misfires). It can be cleaned with standard oil-based solvents and does not require the use of a specific priming to get the desired results. The Black-Horn-209-powder is used in conjunction with regular 20.9 shotshell primers. Because it is non-corrosive, there is no longer any need to swab between doses, allowing you to spend more time in the field.
blackhorn 209
Blackhorn 209 Muzzleloader Powder Substitute is a high-performance, low-residue propellant that has been specifically designed for use in modern inline muzzleloaders equipped with 209 primer ignition systems. This new, powder alternative, manufactured by Western Powders, shoots consistently, generating higher velocity and greater precision than previous propellants. In addition, Black-horn-209 is the only non-corrosive muzzleloading available on the market today that is unaffected by temperature and humidity, resulting in a significant reduction in misfires and hang-fires, as well as increased accuracy.

Very consistant groups with this powder. Am very pleased with all aspects of this product. Highly recommend.

after purchasing my new cva accura rifle i tried numerous combinations of powder/pellets. i could not find any combination that worked. i purchased the blackhorn 209 powder and then i purchased the blackhorn 209 breech plug. i use 250 grain thompson shockwave bullets and i am now putting five shots in the diamond at 100 yards-consistently. very impressed.

Cleans up faster and with less hassle than any other blackpowder substitute I’ve used. I haven’t had any ingition problems and use the Winchester 209 blue box primers. I push a Hornady 250 SST-ML HS/LD sabot with 110 grains (by volume) in my V2. I use the Blackhorn breech plug designed for this power. Accuracy is scary with bullets touching at 50 yards and about an inch at 100 yards. Pricey, yes. But I will pay the price for this level of performance.

I’ve been using BH 209 since it was introduced 3-4 years back.. Great product, extremely easy clean up that’s far simpler than other Black Powder substitutes, very consistent results and great accuracy. Consistently produces 3/4 inch MOA 3 shot groups at 100 yds, using 110 gr.(by volume) Nothing else on Market comes close. Have killed several whitetails, an aoudad and fallow buck in last 3 years at ranges up to 175 yds. All one shot kills.

Try this powder and you will never go back to pellets or black powder. I couldn’t believe how clean this product is!!! You can shoot 15 /20 rounds without worrying about the next sabot from being seated. I have shot 2 nice does so far this year in NH and both does dropped in their tracks using 100 grains of buckhorn and the t/c 250 grain shockwave mag express. Cleanup is remarkable, just using hoppes 9 . Cannot say enough about this powder.
cliff hanger –
This is my second can of blackhorn 209 and I wouldn’t consider shooting anything else. You can shoot 30 shots before cleaning and the cleaning is super easy and fast to do.

I bought 5 bottles of this powder for a Uberti 45-75WCF it works great with no pressure
signs at all. No blow by on case necks either. I used reformed 50-90 sharps cases formed to 45-75 using RCBS die set. 350gr bullet and 42grs of BH209 1450fps was exactly what I was wanting to achieve. Almost no fouling whatsoever in barrel, recoil was almost like a 22 rifle. My son shot 6 rounds and was amazed at how little recoil there was. I love this stuff!!
karl Kalen –
try this powder 1st and you probably wont need to look at any other powders….. it cleans up easy, i swab the barrel after 5 shots, just because…last year in a Nebraska deer hunt, it was in my barrel for 5 days with the barrel end taped up, and fired perfectly the last night of my hunt…. try with a few different primers and you`ll be set to go hunting….. I found the Federal 209A shotgun primers were the most accurate in my T/C Pro Hunter FX 50cal…. behind 120grains of the Blackhorn 209…..

After reading scores of reviews, and fearing the corrosions of Pyrodex in my new rifle I thought I would give Blackhorn a try. WOW! What a difference. I can actually see my target right after shooting , because there is hardly any smoke. It doesn’t stink like rotten eggs. I loaded 25 shots and NEVER swabbed the barrel once. No crud ring either. I used CCI Mag 209 primers, as suggested by Max Muzzleloader. No hang fires. Actually quite snappy and crisp on the recoil. Just like shooting centerfire. Cleaned the barrel in second with regular old Hoppies solvent. I will make a prediction that Blackhorn will do for propellant what 209 primers did for ignition, in the world of muzzleloading. This stuff is the pinnacle performance.
Irene –
Just switched to this powder this year. I was shooting Pyrodex pellets. I will never go back! This stuff is sooo much cleaner and my groups are much tighter!
KIT BASKETS –
I bought this about a month ago since a couple friends recommended it and it gets good reviews. I bought an online muzzleloader and was on target at 100yds in 4 shots and ended up with a 1.75″ group at 100. I was shooting Barnes TEZ 250gr projectiles and Remington 209 primers. I only had a front rest so I know it can group better. I weighed 70gr of powder and didn’t need to mess with the load. It’s my first muzzleloader and I’m enjoying it. Powder burns clean. I didn’t swab the barrel between shots and the breech plug came out fairly clean.
dave de B –
I shoot a TC Impact. I found that 100 grains of this powder with 250 grain Barnes bullets is what works best for my rifle. It has very little fouling and is easy to clean up. At 75 yards I can put 3 rounds through the same hole before swabbing the barrel.
gray –
Easy to use, minimal residue, no in-between cleaning, loading multiple projectiles with ease and great performance
Judith –
It is an excellent propellant! Very consistent, never clumps up, and is extremely clean. I used to use 777 pellets, and had to clean up after 2 or 3 shots. Blackhorn is very clean on the barrel.
Irene –
this powder is the absolute best on the market for inlines, hands down…i have a TC Triumph Bone Collector and after trying a couple different types of pellet powders that left me cleaning my bore after every 2 shots i decided to try this and I am beyond happy that I did…shot 20 rounds at the range today and didnt swab the bore once…the 20th round loaded as easy as the 1st…unheard of until this stuff hit the market!…as far as accuracy, you won’t find anything better…brought the gun home from range and clean-up was easiest I have ever experienced…bottom line, if you have one of today’s high end inlines and you’re not shooting this powder, you’re missing the bus…and if anyone wants to know, I shoot the Hornady 300 grain FPB’s and the CCI 209M primers…my TC shoots 1 inch groups at 100 yards with this combo…can’t beat it…happy shooting
mashea –
I use 100 grains of this powder with the Traditions Vortek Ultralight/Leupold Scope combo, 250grain Barnes Spitfire T-EZ sabot, and CCI 209M primer. The powder is excellent, uniform size, and packs in the barrel consistently every time. It always fully burns, and leaves a slippery residue in the barrel that makes it easy to repeatedly load round after round without having to clean between shots.
Odessa –
I used to use other brands in pelletized form-after the first shot it was always a struggle to get the next sabot/bullet down the barrell, accuracy was never consistant… Now, after trying blackhorn 209 in my tc bonecollector w/nikon BDC scope I am dead on at 100 yards(4 shots in a 1″ group-bullseye) after shooting 25 shots in a row…no problem whatsoever with reloading during all 25 shots….Each reload was as if it was the first load after a thurough cleaning…Absolutely Luv Blackhorn 209!!!! I was able to dial in the correct load for best accuracy 100 grains in my gun….110 grains maintained a 4-6 ” group so I went down to 100 grains to maintain a 1″ group or better at 100 yards. Good luck to you all this season! I’m ready!!!
mora –
Burns cleaner and more explosive than pellets,no more pre formed pellets are going in my muzzleloader
hae Kim –
This is by far the cleanest powder I have used for muzzleloading. Cleanup is easy and it while sighting the rifle in it performed the same every time. I was using the TC Omega with the Nikon Omega so the gun was legitimately sighted in at 250 yards. I didn’t need it for the deer pictured below as I was only 30 yards away. But I was prepared to use it at the 250 yard range due to the consistency of the powder burn and the setup of the gun.
Durand –
This is a GOOD (Not a cure all like they make it out to be) black powder substitute. If you do your part and measure your load out carefully, duplicity is easy.
This is NOT as clean as they make it out to be, cleaner than black powder, slightly cleaner than pyrodex, this powder is dirty. It is however nearly smokeless.
The advice often heard about using 15% less is all hype, grain for grain measurement by volume = reality, 100 gr IS 100 gr.
Cleaning: It is better to use hoppies solvent to clean it out then CLP to run through the barrel, then a dry patch. Average number of patches until patch comes out clean = 18 to 20. (REALITY is just that)
+ Pros: Performs well, accurate
– Cons: messy, very expensive for a can that isn’t even a pound.
Osborn –
I made the switch to BlackHorn 209 powder last year for my in-line muzzleloader. This powder works great for me. Virtually no fouling, consistant loading, and accuracy I’ve seen with no other powder. Clean-up is easy with modern centerfire cleaning solvents and methods. Don’t use water for clean-up of this powder, it makes a gummy mess. It does not have the tendancy to absorbe moisture as does other powders I’ve tried. The only problem I’ve encountered is it has a tendancy to hang up in my powder measure due to its shape and size.
Horti –
This is by far the best propellant I’ve used. I can fire 20+ shots without cleaning between shots, with no noticeable effect on accuracy. No crud ring and extremely easy to clean.
Also, it doesn’t draw moisture and clump together in long term storage (a problem I’ve had with Pyrodex). Granted, I could’ve taken better measures to store in a drier area, but with Blackhorn, I don’t need to bother.
Don’t forget to use regular shotshell primers instead of muzzleloading shotshell primers. I’ve had great luck with CCI 209M primers. Using 90 grs with a 250 gr TC Shockwave, I usually get 1 – 2 inch groups at 100 yds.
+ Pros: easy clean-up, no swabbing between shots, doesn’t ‘draw’ moisture like other propellants
Joanna –
I switched to BlackHorn 209 after using 777 and White Hots. It is much easier to load. I would have too swab after every shoot with them.
I use this in my Acura with Winchester 209 primers.
I can shoot about 8 times before I clean with easy loading.
It has gone bang every time. I have heard from others that said it would not ignite in their rifles. Sorry for them because it makes an inline even easier.Joann
MICHAEL HILLS –
After purchasing my CVA Optima, I got 777 Pellets and starting shooting. After 3 shots, I couldn’t get my sabots seated to the same point. Upon inspection I found a nasty crud ring in the powder area of the barrel. After cleaning and firing 2 shots, again the third sabot wouldn’t seat to the same point. In that moment, I began searching for alternatives.
Forward to a few weeks ago and I started using Blackhorn 209. In review after review, I saw many people say that once I went to Blackhorn, I won’t go back. I can understand why now. The ability to load round after round while target shooting has been a big help for selecting bullet type and weight as well as charge volume.
I am now settled on 84 grains (by weight) of 209 and Hornady Monoflex 250gr bullets.
Great product
alma –
I purchased the Blackhorn 209 because I wanted a clean burning powder. The others claim to be clean burning, when in reality they’re not. I shot 8 rounds out of my 50 cal
without cleaning between shots. The accuracy held firm. I have no doubt I could have easily shot 8 more without any problems. The best part was my projectile slid down the bore effortlessly at round 8 as it did on round 1. I couldn’t be happier. I was using win 209 shot gun primers. As blackhorn recommends using cci 209 primers. I didn’t have any ignition problems. Great product
Georgia –
Was worried at first about trying this powder. But after going to blackhorns web site and reading how to use the powder correctly. Examples cleaning the breach plug with a drill bit and using the correct shotgun primers. I was able to shoot 25 times as fast as I could load the rifle with out cleaning the barrel. After the first shot I noticed a slight difference in loading the second slug down the barrel. But the 25th shot was no harder to load than the second shot was. I have tried them all and nothing can perform like this powder!!
Bridget –
Although I agree with the other reviewers that this powder is accurate and you certainly can fire several consecutive sabots without cleaning your in-line , it is harder to measure and more difficult to pour than other modern blackpowder substitutes, is MESSY and EXPENSIVE.
Yolande –
A good friend recommended that I give it a try, after using it he is still a good friend. It worked exceptionally well in my Encore and I did not have to wipe between shots. 10 shot group all on target and in the same vicinity as the center of the target. I did not even have to change scope adjustment over the other powder that I had been using. Did I mention that I did not have to clean between shots and clean up after the range was simple and with simple conventional products, Hoppe’s.
Kay –
Burns clean, CCI or Winchester Blue Box 209 primers and your CVA is a tack driver!! Make sure you use the Blackhorn optimized breach plug!! My CVA Accura V2 loves this powder! Clean clean clean. Not near the cloud of smoke as White hots or Triple7
Zaida –
I experienced hang fires the first time I tested Blackhorn 209. I called the tech support at Western Powders who were great to work with. After cleaning my breech plug with a drill bit per their recommendations, I have had no problems. It is by fare the easiest powder to clean from barrel, no foul smell and shoots extremely accurate. See the technical tab on Blackhorn 209 website for directions to great success like I have had.
Lynda –
This powder lives up to the hype.. I just bought a TC Encore 209/50 and decided to go with Blackhorn based on the reviews. I use Barnes Spit-Fire T-EZ 250’s with 95 grains of BH209. I sent 12 rounds down range in just over an hour. The last round loaded as easy as the first without swabing. Clean up is a breeze just like a regular rifle.
STAN –
O I have read the reviews and see that most negative reviews suggest the powder only works well for a short time. I have had the same container of powder for nearly 5 years. Still performs like the day I made the initial purchase. However, the characteristic that make it perform so well (increased surface area to volume ratio) would also make this powder more susceptible to absorbing moisture. If you are in a humid or wet environment and leave the powder exposed to the elements (on the shelf or in the gun), you will have problems. Hence the phrase–Keep you powder dry. I love this powder and it shoots better than any other powder I have tried in my guns.
Cardwell –
This is the best replacement for black powder I have tried to date went out and bought 10 more, I load 47/70 and 45/90 with 405 gr cast bullets, and use a cardboard card on top of the powder, using the data from the web site for full case equivalent loads work great and accurate, 2″ groups at 100 yards using iron sights. I will not go back to black powder. first shot is as accurate as the 50th and ez to clean up right at the bench with Hoppies#9, 3 or 4 patches and your clean. No brushing or scrubbing necessary. I use CCI large rifle magnum primers and never had a misfire shooting over 500 rounds. You must use a HOT primer a regular one will not work, I tried it in my colt black powder with regular #10 caps and they are unreliable so don’t bother until someone makes a magnum type pistol cap.
li dya –
Started using it 5 years ago and never regretted it. Consistent muzzle velocity and accuracy second to none. Clean up a breeze with wd40 and several patches. I have took 7 deer using black horn 209 from 30 to 150 yards . The farthest one ran was 40 yards the others 1 to 5 feet. Amazing stuff.
samphan –
You won’t go wrong with this powder. No more swabbing between shots. The first shot loads as easily as the last. I put 15 rounds through my Buckstalker inline, and I absolutely love this powder. I’ll shoot real blackpowder in my Flintlock, but for my inline it’s 209 all the way. I’m consistently putting 1″ groups on the paper at 100 yards. Clean up is much easier too.
Paula –
This is absolutely the BEST black powder substitute available. It does not absorb water, it makes much less smoke such that in poor light you can see the shot’s effect, it is not corrosive, clean burning, and it is extremely accurate. With 71 gr. weighed charges, 200 gr. Hornady pistol bullets and high pressure sabots my TC Triumph will shoot clover leafs at 100 yds. Based on telephone conversation with vendor, 70 gr. by weight = 100 gr. by volume.
Elena Correa –
Ive been shooting this powder since it came out and it outperforms anything else out there ive shot them all!!very consistent shot petterns and very easy to clean ill never shoot anything else again.i would recommend this powder to anyone who shoots an inline..
Catherine –
I have fired 25 shots in range visit with no swabbing and there was no change in accuracy. If this powder isn’t the absolute best to use for hunting, I would like to see better. I’m shooting 110gr/vol Hornady 250gr SST @1956 fps. I maybe should go to a 300 gr but I think i’ll be fine. You really should try this powder, it is another level.
fritz –
I used T7 pellets for years. I switched to BH209 recently and it is awesome. It is cleaner and produces higher velocities, which leads to significantly improved accuracy. I can use Hoppes #9 to clean my bore and breach and not have to worry about polluting future powder charges. This stuff is so much easier to use than anything else..
Hague –
Blackhorn 209 is the best powder I have ever used. I use to shoot 777 both powder and pellets.
With Blackhorn the accuracy improved to less than an inch with 110 gr and 250 Gr bullets.
Easy clean up when compared to 777, plus, no powder burn ring either! No, brushing out of the barrel needed, just swab clean!
A dear friend who is a professional shooter said “This is a Game Changer” and he is correct!
The best powder ever!
mormor –
Been using T7 and Pyrodex for years and have experienced the various crud ring problems we have all experienced. I learned about Blackthorn 209 in several articles so had to get some and throw some rounds down range last year with my Knight Disc Extreme and was highly disappointed with the results. But, when I tried in in my wife’s TC Bone Collector things changed!! I recently purchased a Bone Collector myself and couldn’t wait to get to the range and try it out. Funny thing is my brother was also there with his Bone Collector however he had not yet got the Blackhorn bug – after watching for a while he began to make some comments about how accurate I was shooting and the lack of struggle to load the gun. After I finished he began to shoot at the same target I was shooting at. Difference is he was using T7 pellets. At one point in his shooting my wife gave him some good advice – quit, go home, clean your gun, go buy some Blackhorn and start again. Best advice I heard all day long.
Posey –
In my opinion the best black powder substitute out there clean up is a breeze.
DENNIE –
I have tried using all the pellets, without success. Tested Blackhorn 209, in my TC Omega rifle. Weighed powder (84 gr.) using powder scale, used CCI 209M shotgun primers, and Hornady SST 250 gr. Sabot bullets. Achieved 2,120 FPS. at muzzle, with sub 1” groups at 100 yds.
SHINE MON –
i noticed a stronger surfer smell compared to other powder but is good.
james hooker –
Very easy order to store!
My T/C Bone collector 50 cal loves this stuff! I constantly shoot 1 inch groups with Blackhorn powder and TMZ spitfire sabots!
MORGANA –
Switched to BH 209 from Pyrodex pellets due to hunt regulations in Colorado. At 110 yds with 110 grains by volume of BH 209, I got 1.5″ groups with open sights. With 100 grains, 4″ groups. With 90 grains, 2.5″ groups. All with open sights at 110 yards. Nothing beats testing your loads to build confidence in your equipment. The PowerBelt Platinums could not handle the velocity impact into my sand berm with the 110 and 100 grain BH. They shed too much
lead and came apart. With 90 grains BH, the bullets showed perfect mushrooms and held their weight and gave acceptable accuracy with open sights.
Taylor –
I think most the folks giving this stuff five stars have just used it at the range or in dry weather. If it’s raining or the humidity is above 50% this stuff will not ignite…..period!! I put it through Encore, Omega and Triumph and had misfires/delay fire in all three. I would never rely on this stuff in the field.
Brenda –
Best powder than I ever used in my Thompson .50 cal. Encore Endeavor. I use power belts 295gr. with great success. Can load one after the other and no problem loading, even after 8 or 10 shots. What is great just clean with Montana cleaning slovent or Hoppe no.9 and good to go. NO MORE WATER CLEANUP…..
HARRISON –
Like many of you, I have tried virtually every black powder substitute product on the market over the past several years and was never overwhelmed by any of them. Some were inconsistent, some were extremely dirty and some would hardly ignite at all. Then along comes Blackhorn 209 and the whole game changed. This stuff is amazing! I get much better accuracy with it than with any other brand of granular or pelletized powder out of my CVA Accura and Remington Ultimate Muzzleloader, and it is far easier to clean the barrel after shooting it. I’ve gone through probably ten containers of it over the past few years and it has been 100% reliable. One tip: I weigh my charges instead of using the volume measurement method to ensure consistency. 70 grains by weight is the equivalent of 100 grains by volume.
Carlotta –
Having shot 777 pellets the last three seasons I was skeptical about the claims of accuracy and easy cleaning of Blackhorn. It has lived up to them. I highly recommend you weigh out your charges and mark your speed loaders. The 120 grain by volume is supposed to weigh 85 grains. When I poured a weighed charge into my Hornady loaders it measured at 110 by volume and in my brass measure it was over 120 by volume. I was able to shoot a 100 yard 3 shot 2 inch group and a 150 yard 3 inch group on the range with Hornady 250 grain bullets and Harvester sabots. Took rifle home and cleaned it up spotless with Hoppies #9 in a short amount of time. No crud ring and no noticeable change of accuracy in two 3 shot strings with no cleaning between the 6 shots. You have to use regular 209 primers to light the candle as I tried a 777 primer and it wouldn’t do it. I am excited for the opening of Nebraska black powder antelope season here in a month!!!
chas hunter –
Shot groups under two inches at 100 yds for three different Power Belt bullets. Easy to clean is the clincher. No other way to go.
KEVO MWAS –
This is the most accurate and reliable muzzleloader powder out there, but you got to follow directions from Western powders # 1use CCI shotgun primers, with CCI magnum the best not weak MZ primers #2 make sure flash hole is clean and correct diameter. I’ve hunted with B209 for years in all weather conditions without a single
problem. The most accurate reliable muzzleloader powder you can use IF you follow directions and know what your doing.
marsidi –
I’ve been shooting muzzle loaders for over 40 years, black powder initially, then Pyrodex and tried some of the others such as Triple 7. I heard about Blackhorn 209 and tried it in a then new TC Omega. I haven’t shot anything else since. I live and hunt along the humid Texas coast and I have never had a problem with misfires or hangfires, even after leaving the same charge in the barrel over a 2 or 3 day period (I know – not good practice). I use Remington 209 STS primers. Fouling is minimal and clean up is with regular smokeless powder solvent.
ARABO MAMAN –
Don’t get me wrong this is a good powder if you only shoot a few times a year. Triple 777 is just as good. White Hots are excellent also. My complaint is Black Horn raised the price $50 bucks & you only get 10 ounces of powder. I’ll stick to my triple 777 & shoot a lot longer at the range for a lot less. Good bye BLACK HORN
WILLIAN –
I just made the switch to Blackhorn 209 and couldn’t be happier. I can shoot multiple times without swabbing between shots. The smoke is minimal compared to other propellants. My shots are consistent and my groups are tight.
JOHNNY –
I followed all the tips such as making sure the flash hole was cleaned out, etc and this powder worked incredibly well!! I left a load in my muzzleloader for a week out in the barn, the weather started out as windy and raining at 50 degrees and by the end of the week it was 6 degrees and snowing. The gun went off without hesitation!! As for accuracy, it was awesome without even trying. Better groups than I’ve ever had!
shamot –
This is by far the best powder for modern in line muzzleloaders. Its powerful and accurate. Both deer I’ve taken with it, their legs went out from under them like they were cut off. DRT. Good stuff, and clean too. No field cleaning needed and no patching between shots. Perfect hunting powder.
Tomas –
I shoot a cva optima in a .45 cal with a 26 inch barrel. After pyrodex stopped making pellets for the .45 cal i had a hard time finding the right load. I decided to try this blackhorn powder with the 223 grain powerbelt platinum. This powder is good. I shot 8 shots to get sighted in and never swabbed the barrel once. I shot 110 grains of powder and found the accuracy was the best this gun has ever shot. 2.5 inch at 100 yrd. The temp was 17 degrees and windy, no hang fires or problems with the powder not burning completely from what i could tell.
Maranda –
I love this powder. Extremely clean burning resulting in excellent accuracy. Has great terminal performance for hunting situations. No ignition problems regardless of conditions.
Debbie –
I have tried blackpowder, Pyrodex, Clean Shot, Triple Seven, Black MZ and now Blackhorn 209. The clear choice for me is Blackhorn 209. I think Triple Seven and Black MZ are the same thing. I had trouble with the “crud ring” on follow up shots with both. Absolutely no problem with Blackhorn shot after shot with no swabbing. With Barnes 250 grain T-EZ bullets I am getting 3/4 ” groups at 100 yds. with both my TC Pro-Hunter and my son’s TC Omega. Groups were much wider using Hornady 250 gr. EZ load sabots. 100 grain measure about tore the petals off the sabots and the bullets apparently wobbled in flight evidenced by the large holes in the target. Had perfectly round holes with the Barnes and the sabots had opened perfectly. I never would have guessed this level of accuracy with a muzzleloader.
Jenn –
I have shot Pyrodex and 777 in muzzle loaders and the Buckhorn 209 powder is superior to all. After shooting six rounds through my new Traditions Vortek Ultralight sighting in I proceeded to put three shots under a nickle at 100 yards. Yes, under a nickle and I did nothing to the barrel between shots. There was no crud ring and the bullet slid down with the same pressure every time. In case you have not read my other reviews here is the information on the load/gun combination again. 100 grains of Buckhorn 209 powder, Barnes 250 grain Spit-Fire T-EZ bullet, CCI 209 Magnum primer in the Traditions Vortek Ultralight muzzle loader with the Leupold scope. Clean up was very easy. I put three wet patches down the barrel and four dry patches and it was clean. Breach plug came out with ease and by that I mean no wrench needed. Nice to see product work as advertised.
pack drops –
Shot great at first but during test firing for hunting this yr it didn’t fire. Thought it was oil in breach plug so cleaned plug and got it to fire. Reloaded and it didnt fire again. Put in new primer and got a hang fire. After dark I fired 4 primers and they all shot flames over 2 ft out the barrel. Will go back to FF! Btw, new, inline CVA with Rem BP primers. Have been shooting ml’s for 50 yrs.
Gerald –
This is a very consistant powder after some ignition issues were resolved. My CVA Apex would not fire after one or 2 shots. Western Powders and CVA developed a new breach plug and made it available. I purchased one from CVA abd haven’t had a problem since. My friend had the same problem with his Encore. We drilled the breach plug flash hole out to .030 resolving the problem.
cindy l a –
The process was awesome from alpha guncenter, Do to a problem with my cva they give me another barrel. Well I was trying to sight in my weapon and I was using pellets 150 grains. I had grouping of over 4 inches. Called up bullet manufacturer and he recommend to use blackhorn 209 at 110 grain with he’s bullet. I know this sounds hard to believe but at 100 yards had reached a grouping of .259 inches. This is due to the outstanding performance of this powder. Clean burning and I swear at 110 grains I felt like I was shooting 80 grains no kick no smoke WOW.
Louette –
After pellets and diff sabots I can now shoot more than once without swabbing through my encore fx.i got 3 shots off all within a 1″.The only thing I would like to see different is the can it would be nice to have a spout other than a 2″ hole.
mills –
Definitely hands down the best powder available, do your part and it will go boom everytime.
mark –
I switched to BLACKHORN 209 a year ago and I am glad I did. I was a little skeptical about all the claims the manufacturer made about this powder but after using it they are all true. Much easier to clean and better performance and I can achieve the same velocity with less powder which offsets the added cost of 209.
pasacreta –
Consistant groups shot after shot on the range. Used on a recent elk hunt in Colorado. My beginning load was finally used on a 5 by 5 on day 6, it performed perfectly. Super quick delivery just too cool, am coming for more again
JEFF FANNI –
I’ve been using BH209 now for several seasons. It has performed very well. It’s more powerful than other powders and does not absorb water. Clean up is with regular solvent (Hoppes, etc.). Super easy. There is only one caveat: ALWAYS clean your flash channel! If you do not, eventually you will have a hangfire or failure to ignite. Fortunately, it takes a 1/8″ drill bit to clean (dry and hand turn only!) and just a minute or two of work. But you MUST do this. Otherwise you’ll be grumpy like the negative reviewers below. alpha gun center is a place to order your blackhorn 209 from

Stuff is amazing. Shot 14 times with no swabbing. Shoots quarters at 100 yards. It might be more of a pain to load than the triple 7 but its well worth the effort. Cleaning is also a breeze. A+ above i won’t be saying these if alpha gun center wasn’t existing. I sincerely recommend alpha guncenter to y’all
